The 2019 Ford Puma, an SUV-inspired small crossover with uncompromising cargo space and state-of-the-art mild-hybrid engine technology, was unveiled in 2018 by Ford.

With attractive aesthetic elements such as unique headlights mounted on top of the fenders and sporty, aerodynamic lines, the 2019 Ford Puma has opened a new chapter in Ford’s design identity. Compact crossover dimensions allow for a class-leading 456 litres of uncompromised luggage capacity and a higher ride height for a safer driving experience.

Ford’s EcoBoost hybrid 48-volt technology provides Puma customers with strong, fast performance and improved fuel economy. Delivering up to 155 PS, the mild-hybrid powertrain combines a low-friction 1.0-litre EcoBoost gasoline engine with electric torque assist.

An innovative combination of top-tier functionality and visually stunning design

The 2019 Ford Puma is an attractive, sporty and seductive SUV that leverages Ford’s B-car architecture by adjusting the vehicle’s wheelbase and track width.

The Puma’s low, sloping roofline creates a striking, easily recognizable appearance, but the “anti-wedge” shape, with its flatter beltline and wider hips, departs from the convention of wedge-shaped crossover side profiles for more balanced proportions. Working with the engineering team, Ford designers developed a highly emotive surface that overlays the vehicle’s pronounced proportions. The result is a vehicle with uncompromising style, access and cargo space.

The Puma’s sensual styling continues to the doors, where prominent wheel arches emphasize the vehicle’s sporty character. The artfully crafted “canoe-shaped” headlights sit high on the fenders, giving the front end a bold appearance. Immediately below are the fog lights LED, which are integrated into the front air intakes that direct airflow over the front wheels to reduce turbulence and improve aerodynamics. Puma’s headlights, which extend to the brand’s instantly recognizable grille, give the company’s vehicles a striking, aerodynamic look and friendly expression.

Different trim levels for the 2019 Puma crossover, such as the sporty Puma ST -Line and the classy Puma Titanium, cater to different tastes.

The Puma Titanium features a chrome radiator grille, side sills and fog lights, as well as exclusive 18-inch alloy wheels in Pearl Gray. The Puma has a class-leading luggage capacity of 456 liters, making it the best in its segment. After folding down the second row of seats, the cargo area provides space for a trunk 112 centimeters long, 97 centimeters wide and 43 centimeters high.

The Ford MegaBox is a deep and flexible storage compartment that can easily fit two golf bags in an upright position, meeting and exceeding customers’ needs for practical luggage capacity.

The 80-liter volume of the 763x752x305 millimeter storage solution is sufficient to store items up to 115 centimeters high, such as potted plants, in an upright position. The compartment can also be used to stow dirty sports clothes or muddy rubber boots with the soft top closed. The Ford MegaBox is waterproof thanks to its plastic interior and drain plug.

The Puma’s “floating” A-pillar is another feature that adds to the car’s already ample dimensions. As the beltline merges directly into the hood, the visual mass of the cabin is shifted further back, creating an imposing but unmistakably graceful profile. Various equipment variants of the 2019 Puma Crossover, such as the sporty Puma ST -Line and the classy Puma Titanium, cater to different tastes.

The storage solution has a volume of 80 liters and measures 763 mm by 752 mm by 305 mm. This makes it suitable for stowing upright items up to 115 cm high, such as potted plants. The compartment can also be used to store dirty sports clothes or muddy rubber boots while the top is closed. The Ford MegaBox is water-repellent thanks to its plastic interior and the drain on the underside.

The Puma’s boot floor may be readily modified with only one hand to meet load needs and to hold one of three places in the cargo space for even more versatility:

• The Ford MegaBox is offered with the largest storage capacity possible at the lowest position.
• When raised, the space underneath widens to provide a cargo floor that is level with the second-row fold-flat seats.
• When the floor is removed, it may be safely stowed upright against the backs of the second-row seats to accommodate its whole 456-liter capacity.

The movable boot floor has a honeycomb structure that provides durability and strength. It was modelled on the hexagonal cells used in the manufacture of high-strength components for jet aircraft and supercars.

Ford’s hands-free tailgate, a first in this category, makes loading the Puma even easier. With a simple step under the rear bumper, the technology allows access to the boot even when you have your arms full of groceries, kids or sports equipment.

To address the question of what to do with the parcel shelf when loading, unloading and transporting bulky items, the Puma tailgate features an original integrated parcel shelf. The luggage cover, which is attached to the tailgate, moves along with the tailgate, eliminating the need for side supports and allowing easy access to the rear cargo area. Bulky items can be easily fitted into the flexible luggage cover.

Modernized powertrain engineering

Puma customers are among the first to take advantage of Ford’s innovative mild hybrid architecture. This is designed to reduce fuel consumption while making Ford vehicles more fun to drive through more powerful and faster performance.

The Puma’s 1.0-litre EcoBoost gasoline engine is enhanced by EcoBoost hybrid technology with an 11.5 kW belt-driven integrated starter-generator (BISG). The air-cooled 48-volt lithium-ion battery is charged by the BISG, which replaces the conventional alternator. This is done by recovering and storing energy that is often lost during braking and coasting.

In addition to assisting with torque during everyday driving and acceleration, the BISG also acts as a motor, merging smoothly with the low-friction three-cylinder engine and using the energy stored within it to power the vehicle’s electric auxiliaries.

The clever, self-regulating mild hybrid system, available in 125 PS and 155 PS versions, continuously assesses how the vehicle is being used to decide when and how intensively to charge the battery for optimal results, and when to use the stored battery charge using one of two strategies:

• According to WLTP studies, torque substitution may increase fuel economy by up to 9% by using the BISG’s electric motor capabilities to supply up to 50 Nm of torque while minimizing the amount of work needed of the gasoline engine. The 125 PS variant’s torque substitution results in CO2 emissions of 124 g/km and fuel efficiency of 5.4 l/100 km, while the 155 PS variant’s torque substitution results in CO2 emissions of 127 g/km and fuel efficiency of 5.6 l/100 km. *
• Torque supplementation, which uses the BISG’s electric motor capabilities to generate up to 50% more torque at lower rpms, may enhance the overall amount of torque available from the powertrain by up to 20 Nm above the level available from the petrol engine alone at full load.

For a more adaptive and connected driving experience, Electronic Torque Assist delivers more powerful, responsive performance with up to 50% more available torque at lower engine speeds. By reducing turbo lag with a torque supplement that also spins the engine faster to ensure sustained turbocharger response, the BISG also allowed Ford engineers to reduce the compression ratio of the 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine and use a larger turbocharger for additional power.

With the BISG, the Puma EcoBoost hybrid’s automatic start-stop system can be used in a wider range of scenarios to save even more fuel, such as coasting to a stop below 15 mph and even when the gear is engaged and the clutch pedal is depressed. The BISG can restart the engine in about 300 milliseconds, which is roughly the blink of an eye.

Customers can also choose from a range of advanced Ford EcoBoost gasoline and Ford EcoBlue diesel engines, both of which come standard with an automatic start-stop system for even more cost-effective operation, and a smooth-shifting six-speed manual transmission.

The Puma’s 125 PS, 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine can emit 131 g/km of CO2 and settle for 5.8 l/100 km of gasoline. A diesel engine and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission will be added to the range after market launch.

Another feature of the Puma’s 1.0-liter EcoBoost and EcoBoost hybrid powertrains is Ford’s first-ever cylinder deactivation system for a three-cylinder engine. This system automatically shuts down one of the engine’s cylinders when full power isn’t needed, such as when idling or cruising. In less than 14 milliseconds, the technology can turn a cylinder off or on again.

Ford’s B-car design, which also gives the Ford Fiesta class-leading handling characteristics, is further optimized by Puma. A redesigned, stronger composite-link rear suspension, larger shock absorbers, stiffer suspension bushings and optimized upper suspensions minimize friction and increase overall chassis stiffness to deliver class-leading driving dynamics.

Technologies that inspire confidence

Ford Co-Pilot360 technologies are provided by Puma using 12 ultrasonic sensors, three radars and two cameras strategically placed around the vehicle. These technologies improve protection, driving and parking, and are designed to make driving more relaxed, less stressful and safer.

The seven-speed automatic transmission enables features such as adaptive cruise control with Stop & Go, traffic sign recognition and lane centering to help the vehicle maintain a safe distance from traffic ahead. The system keeps the vehicle in the middle of its lane and adjusts speed to stay below speed limits by watching for speed signs on overhead gantries and on the side of the road. In addition, you can use data from the in-vehicle navigation system.

With Stop & Go, the adaptive cruise control can bring the vehicle to a complete stop in stop-and-go traffic using up to 50% of the total braking force and automatically start the vehicle if it takes less than 3 seconds to stop. The driver can press a button on the steering wheel or gradually depress the accelerator pedal to initiate start-up from a standstill lasting longer than three seconds.

The FordPass Connect onboard modem’s Local Hazard Information feature can warn the driver of a dangerous situation on the road, even if it is not visible due to a curve or other vehicles.

Based on up-to-date information from HERE Technologies sourced from local authorities, emergency services and driving data from other vehicles connected to the “cloud”, local hazard warnings are sent independently of the navigation system.

Drivers are notified by radio of hazards such as road works, broken down cars, animals, pedestrians and objects on the roadway, and hazardous driving conditions, giving them advance notice of looming scenarios outside their field of vision.

Available for the first time in a Ford B-segment, the rearview camera records a 180-degree view that can be displayed on a tablet inside the vehicle. This makes it easier to spot passing pedestrians, bicycles and other vehicles when backing out of a parking space or in driveways.

Ford’s Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) with Cross-Traffic Alert can warn drivers when backing up of cars that may soon cross behind them, allowing Puma drivers to reverse with more confidence. If the driver ignores the warning, the system can apply the brakes to prevent accidents or mitigate their consequences.

Ford’s Active Park Assist with cross-parking function helps drivers find suitable parking spaces and enables hands-free side-by-side and side-by-side parking. To avoid blinding approaching vehicles, the Puma’s headlights can be automatically dimmed thanks to the automatic high beam function.

Ford’s lane-keeping system is further enhanced by Lane Edge Detection, which can detect the transition from a paved road to an inaccessible surface such as a soft shoulder, gravel shoulder or grass. To prevent the vehicle from leaving the road, the system can apply torque to the steering wheel.

Puma technology also helps drivers navigate busy metropolitan areas. Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection can detect pedestrians who are on the road, nearby or who might cross the road. The technology is designed to reduce the severity of certain vehicle-pedestrian head-on collisions or help drivers avoid such encounters altogether. The technology has been improved in the Puma, which now has a wider camera angle to better monitor pedestrian movements.

By automatically applying moderate braking pressure when an initial collision event is detected, Post-Collision Braking technology helps mitigate the effects of a potential secondary collision in the event of a crash; slowing the vehicle can help reduce occupant injuries and further damage to the vehicle.

Puma drivers can prevent collisions with the following additional technologies:

• In order to detect slower-moving and stationary cars ahead and provide steering help to allow drivers to avoid collisions, evasive steering assist is meant to function at city and highway speeds. It employs radar and a camera to identify these vehicles.
• When driving past two “No Entry” signs on a highway ramp, Wrong Way Alert employs a windscreen-mounted camera and data from the vehicle’s navigation system to provide drivers aural and visual warnings.

Innovative and welcoming

The ultra-modern and opulent interior of a Puma is designed to help its owners gain control over everyday life and create a place of retreat. Puma’s first lumbar massage front seats make travel more comfortable by revitalizing tired muscles. The three-winged massager features three intensity levels and three different rolling directions.

The second-row bench seat has been shaped to ease entry and exit, while the front seats feature slim backrests to maximize knee room for second-row passengers. A height-adjustable driver’s seat is also available.

Depending on the Puma model, front and rear seats are available with removable, washable seat covers that make it easier than ever to keep the interior looking like new. The interior was customisable with unique colors and patterns, and thanks to the built-in zipper, the covers can be removed with just one hand. A full-length opening panoramic roof consisting of two nearly full-length panes of tempered tinted glass gives front and rear passengers an even greater sense of space and airiness.

Innovative features help drivers manage their hectic work and leisure schedules, including a wireless charging station for iPhones. Located just below the instrument panel, the pad recognizes compatible devices to start charging immediately, eliminating the need to block one of the Puma’s two USB ports with a charging cable.

Wireless charging allows devices to stay connected to Ford’s SYNC 3 communications and entertainment system via Bluetooth, allowing Puma drivers to control music, navigation and other connected smartphone functions with simple voice commands. The system is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, free of charge, and is supported by an 8-inch center touchscreen that can be operated by swiping up and down.

The Puma transforms into a mobile WiFi hotspot with access for up to 10 devices thanks to FordPass Connect on-board modem technology. The technology enables a number of convenient services through the FordPass mobile app, including vehicle location, vehicle status that shows oil levels and alarm status, among other things, remote door lock release and remote start for models with seven-speed automatic transmission. Regardless of driving conditions, a B&O sound system is available that has been dynamically calibrated to provide a superior sound experience.

A 150mm x 200mm externally connected subwoofer, built into the trunk without restricting luggage storage space, is part of the 10-speaker system and produces a rich bass tone. To provide a wider soundstage at seat height and a comprehensive listening experience for every listener, the placement of the tweeters has been optimized. A 575-watt amplifier with digital signal processing drives the system and is responsible for equalization, sound mixing and selectable surround sound.

A 12.3-inch, fully configurable digital instrument cluster allows the driver to customize and prioritize the display of information, including alerts from satellite navigation systems and driver assistance systems. The instrument cluster takes advantage of free-form technology that allows for seamless interior design through curved upper edges. Circuitry is integrated into the display of the free-form screen, allowing designers to modify the display in ways other than the traditional rectangle.

The 24-bit digital “True Color” instrument cluster also enables the display of complex, high-resolution, user-friendly images and icons across the color spectrum, making them brighter, less taxing on the eyes and easier to read.
